Vreeland on Hutton

DIANA VREELAND’S MEMO ON LAUREN HUTTON

Diana Vreeland wrote a memo in 1970 regarding the model and actress Lauren Hutton. It reads…

“This girl is obviously on her way to being an important star in the movies. I feel that we are not using her importantly enough. We are not working on her make-up, hair, expression. The photographs that I see of her taken from movies are very much more beautiful than anything we do. We never change Lauren. She is still the bug-eyed kid that we originally photographs and the girl has travelled a long way and her movie pictures are beautiful. Please let us take trouble with her and when we are using her let us use her importantly.” – Diana Vreeland, January, 1970.

It led me on a search to find images of Ms Hutton from the pages of Vogue both before and after this note was written. I was curious to see what Vreeland’s words meant but also the creative impact on an iconic face of fashion.
